The importance of professional installation by an expert
Water heaters are complex appliances with many moving parts that require expert knowledge to handle correctly. Depending on the type of water heater you have, you are dealing with gas, electricity, or oil, all of which can be dangerous for even those that are experienced. In addition, a professional installation will ensure your water heater’s longevity as the professional will ensure that it is running efficiently and installed correctly. An improper install of a water heater can result in power inefficiency and in the worst case, permanent damage to the unit.
When to consider water heater repair
When should you consider water heater repair? A water heater should last between 10-20 years, but every home is different. Below you will find tell-tale signs to help you pinpoint when it is time to repair your water heater.
Inconsistent water temperature
Inconsistent water temperature is a sign that your tank’s dip tube is cracked and will need to be replaced. In addition, water discoloration or a metallic smell is another indication that there may be rust or corrosion in the steel lining of your tank, which will need to be replaced immediately.
Hot Water Runs Out Fast
If your hot water runs out too fast, a heating element may be broken and will need to be replaced.
Leaking Water from Tank
Leaking water results from high pressure in your tank that isn’t regulated through a release valve. If your tank continues to leak regularly, you may have a faulty pressure valve. If your tank continues to leak periodically, you need to replace it immediately as it can lead to a tank explosion.
Water Heater Noises
If you notice strange noises such as knocking, it is time to consider replacing your water heater or at the very least, clean out your tank. Knocking indicates sediment build-up in your tank, so it is best to flush the tank of any mineral deposits regularly.
Corrosion from Leaks
Call a professional immediately if you notice any signs of corrosion or rust on your water heater. Corrosion means that your water heater is permanently damaged and will need to be repaired or replaced. In addition, prolonged use of this water heater can result in flooding or leaking as the structural integrity of the water heater fails.

Water heaters are available in five different variants: Storage/Tank, Tankless,
Heat Pump, Solar, and Indirect Tankless systems. Tank-based water heaters heat up the water in the tank and funnel it through the appropriate systems. Tankless systems use coils to transfer heat and are better for providing on-demand heat. Heat pumps utilize heat in the environment to heat up the water and electricity is only used to move the water, making the system very energy efficient. Solar water heaters utilize energy from the sun but will require solar panels or a method of capturing sunlight to power. Lastly, Tankless indirect systems utilize electricity, oil, or gas to heat the water on demand.
Your water should heat up after 30-40 minutes.
If your water temperature is too high or enters your system at high pressure, the heater pressure will increase. In addition, leaks can occur if there is an issue with the temperature and pressure relief valve.
