How To Shut Down Your AC and Keep It Safe!

October is here, and it’s only a matter of time until we experience Colorado’s colder weather. Homeowners will be switching over to their heating, but they likely won’t be using their AC. Unfortunately, the AC system also includes the condenser outside, and that needs to be protected from the snow. To ensure your AC will still work next year, you have to know how to shut it down properly. Fortunately, we have all of the advice you need to be certain your AC will be ready for another summer.

Here’s what you need to do the shut down your AC:

Fix any damage

Before you start the process of shutting down your AC, look over both the indoor unit and the condenser and have us fix any damage it may have. Letting a damaged AC sit over the winter will only make the damage worse. There’s nothing quite like discovering too late that you’re going to be hot next summer.

Turn off the condenser’s power

Your AC isn’t just a single indoor unit. There’s also a condenser outside that needs to be disconnected from the power. If it still has power during the winter, it might turn on during a warm spell and suck in ice and snow. To turn it off, go outside and switch off the AC unit’s breaker switch. You’ll often find it under a flip-up lid near the condenser or on the side of your house. Keep in mind that you’ll need to switch the breaker back on next time you want to use it.

Fix up the condenser

Now that the power’s off, you should take the time to fix up the condenser. Grab a broom to sweep away any branches, leaves, or other debris around or on the condenser. Next, use a low-pressure hose spray to wash the condenser’s outside cabinet. While it dries, check to see if the filter needs replacing and make sure the seals on the condenser are tight and don’t look damaged. If there’s any damage, call us today.

Cover up the condenser

When the condenser dries off, cover it with a water-proof cover and secure it with some bungee ropes so it won’t blow away. Both of these things can be found at your local hardware store. A water-proof tarp can work just as well, but make sure it’s secured and can cover the whole condenser.
